"The 3 R’s: Roofs for shelter, Roots for culture, Readers for life."
Empowering Minds Through Culture, Critical Thinking & Curiosity
At Roofs, Roots & Readers, literacy is more than letters and books—it’s cultural affirmation, independent thought, and social-emotional power. Our curriculum is rooted in the richness of Africa and the African diaspora, and it is designed to teach young learners to read the world as well as the words on the page.
We embed independent and critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and environmental exploration through a blend of stories, social studies, math, science, music, art, and real-world experiences.
Literacy is more than a school skill—it’s the foundation of self-expression, empowerment, and opportunity. In many Philadelphia neighborhoods, low literacy rates limit children’s futures. At Roofs, Roots & Readers, we create environments where books, stories, and language are woven into daily life, ensuring every child has the tools to thrive.
Literacy is foundational to freedom, creativity, and social mobility.
Reading shapes how children express themselves, think critically, and connect with their community.
Black children thrive when stories reflect their culture, history, and identity.
Our goal: nurture confident readers, proud storytellers, and curious learners ready to question, create, and contribute.
Representation matters. Our program integrates African American cultural traditions and texts into literacy practices:
Storytelling traditions like call-and-response and oral history
Afrocentric children’s books where kids see themselves reflected
Symbols and patterns (e.g., kente, adinkra) incorporated into reading and art activities
Songs, poems, and clapping games rooted in African diaspora culture
These practices affirm identity while strengthening literacy and language development.
🏛 Library Visits, Book Drives & Reading Corners
We center books and libraries as joyful, daily parts of childhood:
Weekly Library Visits introduce children to community librarians, book borrowing, and special storytimes.
Book Drives ensure every child has a personal collection of affirming books at home.
Reading Corners in each family childcare home provide quiet, cozy spaces stocked with curated, diverse books.
Our curriculum is designed around exploration, expression, and equity. Sample units include:
“My Name, My Story” – Cultural identity and storytelling
“From Philly to Ghana” – Mapping and diaspora
“Counting Beats & Patterns” – Math through African drumming
“Garden as Classroom” – Environmental learning in food justice gardens
“Feelings Have Faces” – Emotional literacy and self-regulation through music and art
Empowering families is central to our model:
Take-Home Literacy Kits with books, story cards, and games
Parent-Child Reading Challenges with monthly incentives
Cultural Literacy Workshops for caregivers
Downloadable Guides on reading aloud, asking open-ended questions, and using books to build pride and problem-solving
🌍 Together, we are raising readers who are rooted, radiant, and ready to reshape the world.
